HUMBLE, Texas | The Alabama State University women's bowling team opened play Friday at the SWAC West Round Up Day one, hosted by Prairie View A&M, posting a 2-3 record through five baker matches.
The Hornets totaled 4,396 pins across 25 games for a 175.8 team average, finishing the day in fifth place in the team standings. Alabama State earned wins over Southern and Texas Southern while falling to Jackson State, Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M.
Individually, Olivia Miller turned in a strong opening day for the Hornets and sits second overall in the tournament standings. Miller rolled a five-game total of 1,006 pins, posting a 201.20 average to trail only Jackson State's Paige Hubert.
Taylor Lee also delivered a solid performance for Alabama State, averaging 177.6 with a total pinfall of 888, while Jenna Knight followed closely with an average of 176.4 over five games. Nikia Thomas and Nevaeh Williams rounded out the Hornets' lineup, contributing 812 and 808 pins, respectively.
Alabama State opened the day with an 845-768 win over Southern before dropping a narrow decision to Jackson State, 930-883. The Hornets suffered back-to-back losses to Alabama A&M (864-863) and Prairie View A&M (867-856) before closing the day on a high note with a 949-836 victory over Texas Southern.
The Hornets will continue competition Saturday with additional traditional matches as the SWAC West Round Up resumes at 8:30 a.m. in Humble.
