HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Alabama State University women's golf team set out on its fourth competition of the season as it faced a 13-team field at The Judson, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi, at the Hattiesburg Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
The Hornets had a strong performance and stayed well clear of the bottom of the standings for the first two rounds, recording one of the best scores of the first round with a +20, then coming back to close out the first day with a 21-over-308. As other teams found the second day to be more difficult, the Hornets wrapped up the tournament with a +36Â in the third and final round for a 77-over-941, tying UAB for 12th as play concluded Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman
Zoey Stern led the charge for the Hornets in the opening round, carding a 1-under-34 with three birdies on the front nine and securing five pars on the back half to finish +3.
Cadence Nance and
Jade Scott each had a pair of bogeys and one stroke improvement on the back nine, having identical 39-38 rounds to open the tournament. The other qualifier from that round was
Jada-Reese Pittman, who had six straight holes of par or under and finished 7-over in the early portion of play.
Scott excelled in the middle round, turning in five birdies and adding six pars to finish 3-over-75, the top mark on the team. Nance, while not recording birdies in her second round, remained extremely consistent in holes 18-to-36, hitting even par on 13 holes for a +5 finish. Stern followed up her big first round with a trio of birdies on the front nine to match Nance's finish at 5-over-77.
Christiana Marcellus rounded out the top four with three birdies on an 80-stroke round for the second-year Hornet.
The final round saw Nance rise up to the top spot on the team's leaderboard, as she sent home a pair of birdies and nine pars for a six-over par-72. Stern also had a couple of birdies and seven pars to finish three strokes back of Nance, while Scott finished 10-over after matching Nance with a team-best nine pars in the round. Marcellus secured the fourth and final spot on the team's leaderboard with a birdie and seven pars.
For Alabama State's individual competitors,
Lucia Ibanez Parada finished +4 on the second round, hitting par-36 on the back nine with a pair of birdies and five pars, while adding a third birdie and five more pars from the front nine for the team's second-best score of the round.
Jennifer Cho's second round was also her best of the outing, as she recorded a pair of birdies and six pars to finish off the day. Ibanez Parada continued playing well into Tuesday's play, as she recorded the second-best third round score of the ASU contingent– an 8-over-80 – thanks to a 2-over front nine that had five pars and a birdie on the par 3, 185-yard seventh hole. Her overall finish (+20, T52nd) would have placed her in fourth on the Bama State squad.
South Alabama had a pair of golfers finish under par as the Jaguars topped the tournament with a 1-over-865. Host school Southern Miss, who boasted tournament medalist Louise Cuyvers (11-under-205) finished second (+13), while Tulane was close behind in third (+22). The tournament featured a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teams, as Jackson State finished three strokes ahead of the Hornets in 11th (+74).
