Bama State Softball splits a pair at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Alabama State University softball team split a pair of games at Bethune-Cookman over the weekend earning a 6-5 victory in the opener before falling 9-1 in the finale at Sunnyland Park.

In game one, ASU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the first two innings. The Lady Hornets plated a pair of runs in the top of the first behind RBI hits from Mercedes Frazier and Quayanna Forte. Bama State added three more runs in the second thanks to a two-run single by Ayesha Famble and a run-scoring double for Boshia Richardson.

Alabama State scored its final run in the fourth before the Wildcats rallied for five runs over the next three innings to make things close. ASU held BCC scoreless in their final at-bat to secure the victory.

Famble led the ASU offense going 3-for-3 followed by a two-hit performance from Richardson. Destinee Sanchez worked three innings and recorded two strikeouts. Amanda Gracia worked four innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Box Score Game 2
Bethune-Cookman turned the tables on the Hornets in the second game earning a 9-1 victory. The Wildcats posted 13 hits while limiting ASU to just four.

Bama State pushed its only run of the game across the plate in the top of the first when Famble singled up the middle scoring Whitley Golson. Famble collected two of the squad's four hits in the contest.

The Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom of the first and then tacked on two more runs in the second. A five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach and gave BCC the split in the series.

Alabama State next opens up SWAC Divisional play this weekend in a three-game series with Jackson State. ASU hosts JSU at Fain Park beginning with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
