MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University softball team dropped both games of a hard fought doubleheader Saturday against Mississippi Valley State at Lagoon Park. The Delta Devilettes captured the games 7-4 and 3-1 en route to earn the series sweep over the Lady Hornets.
MVSU improved to 18-20 overall and 10-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference while Bama State fell to 9-22 and 6-5. The games marked the final home contests of the season for ASU.
In the opening game, Alabama State outhit Mississippi Valley State but wasn't able to get the win as MVSU escaped with a 7-4 victory.
Brehanna Rodrigues,
Boshia Richardson and
Quaniesha Limbrick each collected three hits in the contest but the Lady Hornets struggled to get the timely hits leaving 12 runners on base.
ASU took the early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning after an RBI single by Richardson. MVSU answered with a run in the second as Ta'Niya Wallace homered to open the frame. The Lady Hornets pushed back in front with a run in the third when Limbrick singled home Richardson.
The Delta Devilettes regained the lead with three runs in the fourth then Tiana Parks delivered the decisive hit in the fifth with a two-run homer that gave Valley a 6-2 advantage.
The Lady Hornets cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Limbrick doubled and moved to third on a single by Whitney Golson. The duo then executed a perfect double-steal giving ASU its first run of the frame. Rodrigues followed with a run scoring single up the middle.
MVSU added an insurance run in the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Game two featured a pitcher's duel as both starters posted complete game performances. ASU's
Destinee Sanchez allowed 12 hits over seven innings but only surrendered three runs while striking out four hitters. Lisa Jansen collected eight strikeouts while giving up just one run on seven hits for MVSU.
Valley took the early lead scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Bama State tallied their lone run in the bottom of the third as Limbrick belted a solo homer.
The Devilettes added a third run in the fourth to secure the victory. Neither team could muster a score over the final four innings of play.
Rodrigues and Limbrick led the way at the plate for ASU in the second game finishing with two hits each. Mississippi Valley had four different players produce two-hit performances.
Alabama State returns to the diamond Apr. 14 with a doubleheader at the University of Memphis.
