JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama State University softball team suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Jacksonville State Tuesday evening at University Field.
The Hornets (9-19) and Gamecocks (16-15) battled through six scoreless innings of play before JSU tallied the game's only run on a throwing error in the bottom half of the seventh.
Krystal Ruth led off the final inning with a single for the Gamecocks, moved over on a sac bunt and then scored the game winner when a single from Kaycee Crow forced ASU center fielder Brehanna Rodrigues to throw the ball away at third. The error allowed Ruth to score giving JSU the slim victory.
ASU starter
Destinee Sanchez took the hard-luck loss in the circle for the Hornets after allowing an unearned run on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. She didn't strike out a batter but also didn't issue a walk.
Hilary Phillips, the starting hurler for JSU, collected a career-best nine strikeouts without issuing a walk and didn't allow an ASU runner past first until the seventh.
Boshia Richardson and Rodrigues each singled to account for the Hornets' offensive output.
Crow went 2-for-3 on an afternoon that saw the Gamecocks muster just six hits including two in the final half inning.
Alabama State returns to the diamond for its home finale this weekend with a three-game set against Mississippi Valley State starting Friday at 6 p.m. at Lagoon Park.
