MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Ayesha Famble's homerun marked the lone hit for the Alabama State University softball team in a 7-1 loss to Mississippi Valley State Friday evening in the Southwestern Athletic Conference series opener between the two squads at Lagoon Park.
The pitching duo of Lisa Jansen and Kimberly Spivey led MVSU (16-20, 8-3 SWAC) to the win after surrendering just one hit and collecting six strikeouts. Jansen worked five innings for the win while Spivey pitched a pair of scoreless innings of relief for the save.
The Devilettes took the lead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the second before Famble tallied the Lady Hornets only hit and run with her homer in the third.
MVSU answered with a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and a final run in the sixth to secure the final margin. Jasmine Wilson homered to lead off the fourth and added a two-run blast in the fifth. Ashley Hobbs also added a homerun in the fifth for Valley.
Wilson led MVSU on offense finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Destinee Sanchez pitched a complete game for ASU allowing nine hits and seven runs (three earned) while striking out five.
Alabama State and Mississippi Valley conclude their weekend series Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
