The Alabama State University bowling team finished second during the first ever ASU Hornet Classic Sunday afternoon at the Brunswick Zone Bowling Center.
“I feel extremely well today,” head coach
Andrew Chatmon said. “The girls did an outstanding job this weekend. This is our first time here (In the Championship game). They felt how it was being under pressure, but they came through, they didn't quit, and they stayed focused. I couldn't have asked for anything more, except picking up the spares that they missed in games three and four. We still have room for improvement, so we'll get back to work and look for better results beginning in January.”
The Lady Hornets went seven straight sets against Jackson State in its first match on Sunday. ASU routed JSU 4-3, taking matches one by a total pin fall of 156-141, four by a total pin count of 165-150, five 192-173, and seven by a total pin fall of 221-171. The Lady Tigers won matches two by a total pin fall of 170-156, match three by a total pin fall of 192-181, and match six by a total pin fall of 225-184.
Alabama State faced and overcame a 3-2 deficit over arch rival 17
th ranked Alabama A&M in its second match to win 4-3 in seven games. With the win, the Lady Hornets advanced to the championship round to face eighth ranked Sam Houston State.
ASU put up a fight against the eighth ranked Bearkats, but couldn't pull out the upset, losing 4-1. The games were as follows: Sam Houston State took game one by a total pin fall of 228-192, Alabama State won game two by a total pin fall of 236-232, SHSU took games three by a total pin fall of 206-145, four by a total pin fall of 227-172, and the final game five by a total pin fall of 211-192.
“Sam Houston by far was the toughest team we played here this weekend,” said Chatmon. “We made some mistakes against them and in other games, but being that this was the championship match, and this was our first time being in a championship match made all the difference. This will be our first tournament trophy.”
Other Teams during Competition:
*In the first completed match of the day, the University of Alabama at Birmingham defeated Tulane taking the baker match 4-1. Games were as follows: Tulane 173-148, UAB 173-151, UAB 166-139, and UAB 177-154. The University of Alabama at Birmingham knocked of Jackson State 4-1 in the second round of competition on the day. UAB took frame on by a total pin fall of 150-132, frame two 157-153, frame three 185-180, and frame six 200-153. JSU's lone win came in frame five by a total pin fall of 191-168.
*Eighth ranked Sam Houston State faced 17
th rank Alabama A&M, defeating the Lady Bulldogs in seven matches. Games went as follows: AAMU 215-178, AAMU 223-168, SHSU 198-179, AAMU 228-219, SHSU 194-182, SHSU 203-171, SHSU 210-202. The Lady Bearkats defeated Tulane in their second match on the day 4-1. SHSU won frames two by a total pin fall of 186-163, frame three 187-174, frame four 191-146, and frame five 193-180. The Green Waves lone win came in frame one by a total pin count of 188-185. Sam Houston was the ASU Hornet Classic Champions.

th ranked Alabama A&M finished the tournament in third place defeating the University of Alabama at Birmingham 4-0. The Blazers took fourth place losing each match by a total pin fall of 159-140; 198-183; 210-207; and 200-174.
*Tulane defeated Jackson State in the final match of the day 4-2. Tulane placed fifth while JSU placed sixth. Games were as followed: Tulane 131-120; TU 190-157; JSU 179-147; JSU 193-171; TU 165-141; and TU 171-155.
