On a comeback run with under seven minutes left in game Alabama State women's basketball team fell to South Alabama 64-61, Sunday at the Mitchell Center.

Alabama State (2-2) cut a once 10 point deficit to tie the game 59-59 with 3:54 left in the final half, but South Alabama (2-1) Â nailed their final three out of four free throws of the game to clinch the victory.
"We didn't step up and play defense like we should have and that made the difference in the game," said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "We just didn't make plays when we needed to either we made little mistakes that cost us. We have just got to play smarter."

Ashanti Spencer led the Lady Hornets with 15 points and sophomore
Britney Wright had 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals.Â
Jasmine Peeples added eight rebounds, 10 points and two blocks.

The Jaguars of South Alabama jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over ASU.Â
Tabitha Bradshaw's bucket put ASU on the board to stop the run. The Lady Hornet's went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. Alabama State had at least an eight point lead until USA tied the game for a second time at 36-36 before they went into the half at 37-36 over ASU.

Coming out of the halftime South Alabama continued their run as ASU was down by 10. Â With 9:58 remaining in the game, Alabama State went on a 10-1 run to take a 57-56 lead. Breanna Hall of South Alabama scored her last two points of the game with six seconds left on the clock from there the Lady Hornets could not get anything to fall, and was forced to foul.

The trio of
Kayla Tucker, Wright and
Brittney Smith added the last 11 points to give both teams its last tie at 61-61, but it just wasn't enough to give the Lady Hornets the win as the Jaguars closed out the game.

The Lady Hornets will return to action on Saturday, December 6 as they face Western Kentucky at 2 p.m.
