ASU swept Stillman in today's tennis action
Alabama State hosted Stillman College for their first home match of the 2014 season and the Hornets picked up a 6-1 win while the women won a much closer match 4-3.

ASU's men took care of the doubles point in quick fashion winning all three matches. Ronald Mataba and Adam Coyne defeated Alesander Zobec 8-1 in two doubles. The three doubles team of Takura Mlambo and Digvijay Singh Naruka finished next at two doubles with an 8-2 over Edward Sumonette and Jose Pojasi.

ASU (1-3) swept doubles play as the one doubles team of Jarred Thompson and Dylan Cleary defeated Jangeun Lee and David Torres 8-3.

The Hornets finished off the win picking up singles victories from Cleary, Coyne, Mlambo, Vojnic and Singh Naruka, all in straight sets.

"The men really played aggressive and with a lot of intensity," Head Coach Anuk Christiansz said. "I was looking to see if we could keep the intensity we have been playing with this season and they did a good job with that."

"It was a good win for the men and hopefully it is a good confidence builder for them. We will look to build on this and work at becoming a better team."

The Lady Hornets (1-3) started their day off picking up the doubles points with wins at two and three. Brankica Orlovic and Irina Cvijovic won their three doubles match 8-1 over Gabriela Laguna and Rosana Medeiros. The winning two doubles team finalized the point as Pauline Denis and Melissa Telfer defeated Nair Tolomeo and Angela Corredor 8-2.

The best doubles match of the day came at one doubles where Stillman's Lita Godinet and Veronika Kalugina defeated ASU's Arantxia Wijngaarde and Nathalie Lorenco 8-6.

The singles matches were extremely even but the Lady Hornets picked up wins from Denis and Cvjovic to give ASU three points, only needing one more for the win.

Stillman (1-1) picked up a win at six singles, but Brankica Orlovic's win at three singles gave the Hornets their fourth point, which gave them their first win of the season.

"I am extremely proud of the women and how they played in some close matches," Christiansz said. "There were a lot of long points the ladies had to keep their focus on and it is a positive for them. Like with the men it is good to pick up that first win of the season and the ladies will have a short turn around with matches on Friday and Saturday."

The Lady Hornets will be back in action this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, when they host Savannah State and Georgia Southern. Friday's match with Savannah State is set to begin at 2 p.m. while Saturday's match with Georgia Southern will begin at 10 a.m.

The men will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14 when they will join the women's team in hosting Jacksonville State University at 10 a.m. at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Complex.
