BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Jamie Brown and
Charminiqu Hackney of Alabama State were selected as Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Athletes of the Week, announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.
Brown was named the SWAC Male Field Athlete of the Week, while Hackney was named the SWAC Female Track Athlete of the Week this week. The pair joined Texas Southern's Roman Turner and Mississippi Valley State's Tyefah Saunders as athletes of the week.
Brown, who holds the top mark in the conference in the long jump, finished sixth overall in the event last Friday at the Pepsi Florida Relays, but was the top collegiate student-athlete in the competition. The senior finished with a jump of 7.37 meters (24.02-25), which he recorded on his first jump of the day. He was able to clear seven meters on five of his six jumps.
Meanwhile, Hackney, who holds the top mark in the conference in the 100-meter and 200-meter events, finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.86 seconds during the Pepsi Florida Relays and was just 0.07 seconds out of a top-five finish in the competition. She also ran in the 100-meters on the second day of the meet, improving her top-ranked time with a result of 11.52 seconds.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend in Auburn at the Tiger Track Classic, beginning Friday (April 5) and running through Saturday (April 6).
