BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State returned to the course for the first time in two weeks, and lead after the opening round of the Birmingham Spring Invitational at RTJ Oxmoor Valley Wednesday.
The women currently lead the tournament after round one with a 46-over (334), ahead of second-place Texas Southern by six strokes.
Kei Harris,
Shania Jones, and
Jade Sanders were within the top five of the leaderboard, with Harris leading the way shooting 6-over (78). Jones is in third place after the opening round with a 10-over (82), while Sanders also turned in a 10-over (82) in the opening round.
Meanwhile, on the men's side, Alabama State finds itself in first place after an opening round 3-under (285) leaving them ten shots ahead of second-place Texas Southern (7-over 295) with two Hornets within the top three. The Tigers are one shot ahead of third-place Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-over 296).
Thacher Neal 3-under (69) finds himself one shot off for the lead after the opening round with Prairie View's Zane Brooks sitting atop the leaderboard at 4-under (68). One spot lower is
Afnan Chowdhury, just one shot back from Neal as he turned in an opening round 1-under 71 for third.
Noel Sims rounds out the players in the top five for Alabama State with an even-par 72 in the opening round.
The two teams return to action tomorrow for the second, and final, round of the tournament.
