BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State finished the day where they started on the men's side, this time however, they hoisted the trophy as the champions of the Birmingham Spring Invitational Thursday afternoon at RTJ Oxmoor Valley.
The men finished the tournament at 10-over par (586) with a final round 301, holding off UAPB who finished second at 12-over par (588) after a final round 292. The remainder of the field featured Texas Southern (15-over), Prairie View A&M (52-over) and Alabama A&M (61-over).
Prairie View A&M's Zane Brooks finished as the low medalist at 1-under (143), finishing one shot ahead of Tristan Maharaj and Grayson Martin of UAPB. He also finished two shots ahead of
Thacher Neal,
Noel Sims and
Afnan Chowdhury who all finished at 145.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Alabama State finished with just three players Thursday afternoon which allowed Texas Southern to claim the tournament title. The Hornets started the day with just four players after an injury on Wednesday and finished with three after another on Thursday.
The three players who were able to finish for Alabama State all recorded low rounds, led by
Kei Harris with the low medalist honors at 14-over (158). She finished two strokes ahead of teammate
Shania Jones at 17-over (161) and eight shots ahead of
Abigail Pederson at 22-over (166).
Alabama State returns to action February 23 at home in the ASU Spring Kickoff at RTJ in Prattville.
