BIRMINGHAM, Ala. |Â Alabama State opens the 2021-22 indoor track and field season this weekend in Birmingham, competing in the Birmingham-Southern Ice Breaker event held in the Birmingham CrossPlex on December 3.
Friday's meet will be the only one on the 2021 slate, before running a full schedule at the turn of the calendar year. Both teams will open the season this weekend, with the men preparing to defend their 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) indoor track and field championship, while the women look to improve on their second-place finish.

The track events are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. with the preliminary events for the women's 60-meter hurdles followed by the women's and men's 60-meter dash. The 300-meter events begin at 10 a.m. starting with the women, followed by the men's side at 10:30 a.m.

The semifinal rounds of the meet begin at 11 a.m. and finish with the finals of both the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash at 1 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. respectively.

At 2 p.m., both men and women will compete in the mile, followed by the 300-meter events at the turn of the hour at 3 p.m. The teams will conclude for the day with the 800-meter and 200-meter dashes on both sides, followed by relays.

Field competition will start on Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's weight throws, followed by the shot-put events and the long jump. The men's pole vault is set to begin at 10 a.m., with the women's side immediately – the field events resume at 1 p.m. with the men's and women's triple jump and conclude at 2 p.m. with the women's high jump and men's high jump to close.

The meet is the lone meet in December, before the Hornets return to Birmingham for two consecutive weekends to start the new year at the Blazer Invite hosted by UAB (January 14-15) and the Samford Open (January 21-22).
