MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State travels to Birmingham (Ala.) looking to defend their championships at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Alabama State men enter the meet as the four-time defending champion, the longest reign for a champion on the men's side since the indoor records were kept in 1976. The women have dominated the championships each year, holding the longest reign dating back to 2009.
On the women's side, Alabama State holds the top spot in several events including four of the top seven times in the 60-meters. The Lady Hornets hold the best three times of the season in the event, with
Tionna Brown running a time of 7.38 seconds that had her ranked inside the top 30 nationally at the time. They also hold the top four times in the 200-meters led by
Halima Barlow at 24.37 seconds.
Kyana Evans holds the top time in the conference in the 400-meters, running a time of 57.27 seconds, while
Amari Newsom has the third-fastest time in the event. The Lady Hornets hold the top times in the 800-meters (
Michaela Lewis) and the 1-mile run (
Shamia Jones), while
Penina Chelangat has the third-fastest time in the 3000-meters and is third in the 5000-meters.
The Lady Hornets ran the fastest time of the regular season in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:50.49 at the KMS Open.
Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Matthew Clarke and
David East hold the fastest times on the conference in the 200-meters. Clarke recorded the fastest time this year at 21.57 seconds and was followed by East at 22.10 seconds.
Abdi Hussein has the top time in the 1-mile run (4:18.71) and the 5000-meters (15:25.20) and has the second-fastest time in 3000-meters at 8:52.87.
The men ran the second-fastest time in the regular season in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:20.54.
Cedric Jones enters the championship meet with the top height in the pole vault at 4.17 meters, while
Marcus Cade holds the top spot in the long jump (7.15 meters) and triple jump (14.48 meters).
Caesar Kemp enters the week second the conference in the shot put with a throw of 15.58 meters.
The meet begins Wednesday at 7:30 pm with the 3000-meters and will continue into Thursday with a start time of 8:30 am with the high jump.
