AUBURN, Ala. | Alabama State opened the 2021 outdoor track and field season at the Hutsell-Rosen Track against some of the nation's best at the Tiger Track Classic.
Abdi Hussein finished fifth overall in the 5000-meters with a time of 14:44.43, finishing just behind Thomas Sand of South Alabama in fourth with a time of 14:42.70. The two finished behind a trio of Auburn runners in the event won by Tommy McDonough in a time of 14:27.72.
Matthew Kibet also ran in the 5000-meters, finishing 19th overall with a time of 15:48.17. Meanwhile,
DeMarkis Adams finished 10th overall in the long jump with a distance of 5.81 meters (19-00.75), while
Tarik Simpson finished 19th overall in the javelin with a distance of 34.17 meters (112-01.00).
On the women's side,
Dasia Newell finished 18th overall in the long jump with a distance of 4.64 meters (15-02.75) finishing just behind Rocio Chaparro of South Alabama in the event.
The meet will resume on Saturday with the women's pole vault at 11:30 am and conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:35 pm.
