Alabama State hosts Stinger Classic in season opening weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Head coach Todd Bradley and the Alabama State softball program will open their 2022 regular season this weekend as they host the Stinger Classic at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
The Hornets will host Austin Peay State, College of Charleston, and Purdue Fort Wayne over the weekend of play.

GAME NOTES
  • Alabama State was picked to finish in first place in the SWAC's Eastern Division. The Lady Hornets tallied 11 first place votes and 120 total votes. Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, and Mississippi Valley State round out the list of SWAC East Preseason selections.
  • The Hornets had three players named to the Preseason All-SWAC Teams, with Jaeda Gardner (Pike Road, Ala.) and Madison Myers (Brownsville, Tenn.) earning First Team honors, while first baseman Alex Massie (Pottsboro, Texas) earned Second Team honors.
  • Austin Peay, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Kassie Stanfill, is coming off a 2021 season where it posted a 27-16 overall record, including a 22-11 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play and are picked to finish second in the OVC preseason poll.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne finished 2021 with a 12-27 record, including going 11-24 in Horizon league play. Head coach Amber Bowman is in her initial season leading the Mastodons. She served as an assistant coach at IPFW from 2016-19 before serving as head coach at Davenport in 2020 and 2021.
  • Charleston went 6-35 and 0-18 in conference play in 2021, however have brought in first-year head coach Tracey Lynch as the sixth head coach in Cougar softball history. Lynch previously served as an assistant coach at CofC during the 2013 season when the Cougars won 37 games and finished second in the Southern Conference. She has spent the past six years as an assistant at UNCG working primarily with the Spartan pitchers and catchers.
