STARKVILLE, Miss. | Alabama State fared well in its first day of competition at the 2022 Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays hosted by Mississippi State on Friday with several top 20 finishes. The Hornets were able to place in the top seven in a pair of men's competitions and in a sprint competition on the women's side, with most of its student-athletes competing on Saturday during the meet.
Result (Men)
- Daniel Bayeshea (Kingston, Jamaica) finished seventh overall in the discus competition with a throw of 47.13 meters coming on his fourth attempt. The first two throws for Bayeshea were 44.74 meters and 43.44 meters before fouling on his third attempt. He finished just behind Daniel Pepper of Mississippi State (47.37 meters). His teammate Caleb Walker (Greensboro, Ala.) finished 18th overall.
- Marcus Cade (Thomaston, Ga.) and Xavier Clarke (Miramar, Fla.) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the high jump competition with Cade finishing with a clearance of 1.94 meters, while Clarke finished with a clearance of 1.89 meters. Their teammate, Nicholas Moseley (Pittsbury, Calif.) finished 10thh overall in the event with a clearance of 1.74 meters.
- Cade finished fifth overall in the triple jump competition with a jump of 14.25 meters coming on his third attempt of the competition.
- On the track, Antonio Doster, Jr. (Byron, Ga.) finished 19thh overall in the 400-meter dash after finishing third in his section of the meet. Doster crossed the line in a time of 50.23 seconds to finish just behind Jaimie Omalla of Southeastern Louisiana (50.08).
Results (Women)
- Kalysia Bates (Phenix City, Ala.) finished 11th in her first outdoor meet of the season in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters, while her teammate Dasia Newell (Clinton, Md.) finished 17th overall in the same event.
- Kyana Evans (Detroit, Mich.) again showed why she is one of the best by finishing second in the 400-meters in a time of 55.51 seconds. He finished just behind Joy Abu of William Carey (54.97 seconds). Shamia Jones (Albany, Ga.) finished 11th overall in the 400-meters with a time of 57.89 seconds, while Ulani Toussaint (Miami, Fla.) finished 12th in a time of 58.55 seconds. Â
- Rebecca Bernardin (Turks and Caicos Island) finished the day off for Alabama State with a 13th place overall finish in the 5000-meters with a time of 18:49.35, finishing just two seconds behind Marie Schmidt of Central Arkansas after winning her heat in over 16 seconds (ahead of Joan Kiplagat of Jackson State).
