Hornets fall for the second consecutive night in Daytona Beach

Alabama State and Bethune-Cookman meet in final game of series on Sunday afternoon

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | For the second straight night, Alabama State dropped a game to Bethune-Cookman on the road, falling 8-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Saturday at "The Jack." Alabama State (11-12, 3-2 SWAC) will look to win the final game of the series on Sunday and end a three-game losing streak dating back to a mid-week loss at Troy.

Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR), the reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week, came on in relief of starter Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) and logged 4.0 innings of relief work. Mendez (2-1) suffered the loss as he gave up two runs (one earned) off three hits with six strikeouts; while McIntosh went 6.0 innings in the start and allowed four runs off six hits with four strikeouts. Luis Rodriguez (Canovanas, PR) relieved Mendez in the eighth, giving up a two- run double.

Alabama State was held to just eight hits by Bethune-Cookman (10-12, 5-0 SWAC) pitching with a pair of hitters – Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) and Hunter May (Slidell, La.) – each picking multiple hits. DeGuzman finished the night 3-for-5, while May finished 2-for-4. The Hornets had their chances as they left runners in scoring position in six innings in the loss.
