DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | For the second straight night, Alabama State dropped a game to Bethune-Cookman on the road, falling 8-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Saturday at "The Jack." Alabama State (11-12, 3-2 SWAC) will look to win the final game of the series on Sunday and end a three-game losing streak dating back to a mid-week loss at Troy.
Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR), the reigning SWAC Pitcher of the Week, came on in relief of starter
Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) and logged 4.0 innings of relief work. Mendez (2-1) suffered the loss as he gave up two runs (one earned) off three hits with six strikeouts; while McIntosh went 6.0 innings in the start and allowed four runs off six hits with four strikeouts.
Luis Rodriguez (Canovanas, PR) relieved Mendez in the eighth, giving up a two- run double.
Alabama State was held to just eight hits by Bethune-Cookman (10-12, 5-0 SWAC) pitching with a pair of hitters –
Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) and
Hunter May (Slidell, La.) – each picking multiple hits. DeGuzman finished the night 3-for-5, while May finished 2-for-4. The Hornets had their chances as they left runners in scoring position in six innings in the loss.
How It Happened
- T3 | Alabama State jumped on the board with a big inning highlighted by an RBI single from Corey King (Lithonia Ga.) that scored Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) with the game's first run. Ian Matos (Toa Alta, PR) delivered with an RBI single to left to score Dilan Espinal (Canovanas, PR) from third before Angel Jimenez (Santo Domingo, DR) put the ball in play and it was mishandled by Bethune-Cookman to allow a pair of runs to score (4-0, Alabama State).
- B3 | The Wildcats answered with an RBI single by Irvin Escobar, followed by a three-run home run off the bat of Brian Perez to tie the game (4-4).
- B5 | Bethune-Cookman took the lead in the inning on an infield single by Christopher Patterson followed by a muff on the throw, before Escobar delivered with an RBI single (6-4, Bethune-Cookman).
- T7 | Alabama State got one run back on an RBI groundout by Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) that scored May to pull the Hornets to within a run (6-5, Bethune-Cookman).
- B8 | Perez doubled to left center to score a pair of runs and add to the lead (8-5, Bethune-Cookman).
