Alabama State finishes off sweep with big win on Sunday afternoon

Hornets complete third conference sweep at home this season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State pounded out 19 hits to finish off a sweep of in-state rival Alabama A&M 18-6 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Alabama State (18-14, 10-2 SWAC) jumped ahead with three runs in the first, six in the third, and five in the fifth to pull away for the sweep in a series in which the Hornets outscored Alabama A&M (5-21, 3-9 SWAC) 37-13 in three games. Each of the nine starters picked up a hit in the win with several finishing with multiple hits on the day.

Dilan Espinal (Canovanas, PR) led the Hornets at the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBI, while Hunter May (Slidell, La.) finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Christian Lopez (San Diego, Calif.), Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.), and Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) each finished with two hits each in the win.

Breon Pooler (Huntsville, Ala.) stayed undefeated on the year in a rare Sunday start, improving to 6-0 working 4.0 innings in the seven-inning game. He allowed four runs off seven hits, striking out five in the win.

How It Happened
  • T1 | Tim Dixon drove home Nemo Wright after a leadoff triple for the game's first run (1-0, Alabama A&M).
  • B1 | Alabama State answered when May doubled to left to score a pair of runs, before Lopez singled to left to drive in May (3-1, Alabama State).
  • B2 | May reached on an infield single to drive in Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) from third (4-1, Alabama State).
  • B3 | Williams and Jamison pulled off a double steal before Jamison scored on a throwing error, all before McIntosh doubled to center to drive in Williams. The inning continued when Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) doubled to left center to score McIntosh and then scored himself on a Espinal triple to right center. The inning continued when Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) recorded an RBI groundout followed by a Lopez single up the middle to score another run (10-1, Alabama State).
  • B4 | Williams scored on a wild pitch before Luis Rodriguez (Canovanas, PR) scored on an RBI groundout (12-1, Alabama State).
  • T5 | CJ Mervilus doubled home a game before Dixon singled through the right side to score another run. Janmikell Bastardo drove home the final run of the inning (12-4, Alabama A&M).
  • B5 | Jamison singled through the right side to score May before Rodriguez cleared the bases with a three-run double. DeGuzman singled up the middle to score the final run of the inning (17-4, Alabama State).
  • B6 | Jayden Sloan (Montgomery, Ala.) drew a bases loaded walk to drive in another run (18-4, Alabama State).
  • T7 | The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly and a single to left (18-6, Alabama State).
