MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State completed a sweep of Jackson State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action with an 8-4 victory at the Wheeler Watkins Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon. The sweep is the second straight at home for the Hornets in conference play.
Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR) picked up the win in relief of starter
Austin King (Fulton, Miss.) as he entered the game in the fourth inning. Mendez (3-0) went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit, while
Shadai Colon (Rio Grande, PR) came on in the eighth to pick up his second save. He finished the game by going 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Alabama State (15-13, 7-2 SWAC) was held to just six hits on the day with two of those by
Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.).
How It Happened
- T1 | Jackson State wasted little time in getting on the board as Jatavis Melton hit a solo shot to left on the second pitch of the game (1-0, Jackson State).
- T2 | The Tigers got on the board after a lead-off triple by Asher Akridge who later scored on a Colby Guy RBI groundout (2-0, Jackson State).
- B2 | Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) got the Hornets on the board with a two-run single through the left side to score Jamison and Christian Lopez (San Diego, Calif.) on the play to tie the game (2-2).
- B3 | Alabama State took the lead on a Hunter May (Slidell, La.) single through the left side to score Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) from third (3-2, Alabama State).
- T4 | Jeffrey Rodriguez singled through the right side to push Guy to third before he scored on a throwing error from right (3-3).
- B5 | King led off the inning with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch followed by Chris Lewis (Alabaster, Ala.) scoring on another wild pitch in the inning. Lopez drove home Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) with the final run of the inning on an RBI groundout (6-3, Alabama State).
- T8 | Akridge drove home El'Rico Riley with a double down the right field line to trim the deficit (6-4, Jackson State).
- B8 | Jamison drove home May from third with a single through the right side after he reached on a two-base outfield error. Ali LaPread (Duluth, Ga.) added to the lead with an RBI groundout (8-4. Alabama State).
