MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Following a 60-minute rain delay to start the game, Alabama State and Bethune-Cookman were locked in a pitcher's duel until the Hornets were able to pull ahead and hold on for a 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory to take the weekend series at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Alabama State (24-17, 15-4 SWAC) and Bethune-Cookman traded the lead up until the seventh inning, and the Hornets had a chance to break the game open in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and nobody out. The Wildcats were able to get out the inning with a groundout up the middle.
Bethune-Cookman (19-24, 13-8 SWAC) had a chance to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning with runners on second and third with just one out. The Wildcats hit a chopper to first where
Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) fielded and threw home to cut down the runner for the second out before a fly ball to center ended the inning.
Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) finished the day 3-for-5 finishing a triple shy of the cycle with an RBI on a solo home run, while
Hunter May (Slidell, La.) finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Austin King (Fulton, Miss.) got the start for the Hornets before being lifted in the top of the sixth inning for
Ricardo Rivera (San Juan, PR), with neither pitcher factoring into the decision. King went 5.0 innings allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts. Rivera came in and faced two batters before giving way to
Sebastian Colon (Juana Diaz, PR). He worked 2.2 innings allowing just three hits to earn his first collegiate victory of the season.
Shadai Colon (Rio Grande, PR) came on in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
