MONTGOMERY, Ala. | UAB scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning to outlast Alabama State 8-4 in a non-conference affair that lasted four-plus hours at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on Tuesday night.
Alabama State (24-22) jumped on top of UAB (28-19) with two runs in the first before the Blazers took the lead in the fifth with a three-run home run. The Hornets tied the game in the fifth before taking the lead in the seventh. UAB scored five unanswered runs after a single run in the eighth before the 11th inning.
Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) led Alabama State at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while
Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 in the loss for the Hornets.
Kevin Matos (San Juan, PR) got the start on the mound for the Hornets, going 4.2 innings allowing a pair of runs on four hits before giving way to
Omar Melendez (Cayey, PR). The freshman went 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits before giving way to
Sebastian Colon (Juana Diaz, PR) who recorded the final out of the seventh inning.
Shadai Colon (Rio Grande, PR) suffered the loss after working 3.2 innings and allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits, striking out seven before giving way to
Luis Rodriguez (Canovanas, PR) to finish off the 11th inning.
How It Happened
- B1 | McIntosh doubled to left center to drive in Dilan Espinal (Canovanas, PR) with the game's first run before Christian Lopez (San Diego, Calif.) drove in Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) with another run (2-0, Alabama State).
- T5 | Josh Sears hit a three-run home run to right center to give the Blazers the lead (3-2, UAB).
- B5 | Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) hit into a double play, however, DeGuzman scored on the play (3-3).
- B7 | McIntosh singled to left center to drive in King with the go-ahead run (4-3, Alabama State).
- T8 | Brandon Willoughby scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning (4-4).
- T11 | Willoughby singled through the right side to drive in the go-ahead run and scored on an outfield error before Henry Hunter hit a two-run home run down the right field line (8-4, UAB).

Alabama State returns to action on Friday against Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action in the final home series of the year for the Hornets. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm and will be the first of four games as the two teams will resume their game suspended in the sixth inning prior to the originally scheduled Saturday contest.
