Alabama State sweeps Mississippi Valley State on Saturday

The team will celebrate its seniors on Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State swept a pair of games from Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action on Saturday winning 14-4 and 8-1 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

The Hornets were able to close out the first game in just three innings of play after the suspension in April led by Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) at the plate going 5-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jayden Sloan (Montgomery, Ala.) was hurt before the completion of the game but went 2-for-3 in the game while Cristopher DeGuzman went 2-for-4 with four runs scored. Hunter May (Slidell, La.) finished 2-for-5, while Christian Lopez (San Diego, Calif.) finished 2-for-5 in the 16-iht attack.

In game two, Alabama State ran away early led by three players with multiple hits including McIntosh, who also got the win on the mound. The freshman went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while also logging 7.0 innings and allowing just one run off eight hits with eight strikeouts.  Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Dilan Espinal (Canovanas, PR) finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.

How It Happened (Game 1 – completion of April contest)
  • T1 | Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) scored on a wild pitch before Hunter May (Slidell, La.) singled home a run and DeGuzman scored on a ground ball double play (3-0, Alabama State).
  • B1 | Darrien Chapman hit a two-run home run to left (3-2, Alabama State).
  • T2| Kyler McIntosh hit a solo shot to center before Jayden Sloan (Montgomery, Ala.) doubled to left center (5-2, Alabama State).
  • B3 | Chapman hit a solo shot to left center (5-3, Alabama State).
  • T4 | Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajardo, PR) hit a two-run home run to left center (7-3, Alabama State).
  • B4 | Narvin Booker drove in a run with a single to center (7-4, Alabama State).
  • T6 | Christian Lopez (San Diego, Calif.) double to right to drive in a pair of runs followed by a Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) drove in a run with an RBI groundout. McIntosh drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly (11-4, Alabama State).
  • T7 | May doubled down the left field line to drive in DeGuzman (12-4, Alabama State).
  • T9 | Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) recorded an RBI groundout before McIntosh singled up the middle to score Lopez (14-4, Alabama State).
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • T1 | The Delta Devils got on the board first with an RBI groundout from Christopher Soeder (1-0, Mississippi Valley State).
  • B3 | Ian Matos (Toa Alta, PR) hit a solo shot to center to tie the game (1-1).
  • B4 | Espinal connected on his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right (3-1, Alabama State).
  • B5 | DeGuzman singled up the middle to drive in a run (4-1, Alabama State).
  • B7 | Espinal hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Williams reached on a fielder's choice to drive in another run. Chris Lewis (Alabaster, Ala.) scored on a wild pitch (7-1, Alabama State).
  • B8 | DeGuzman ended the scoring with an RBI single (8-1, Alabama State).
Up Next
The two teams meet in the final home game of the season at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm. The Hornets will honor the senior class prior to the game.
