MADISON, Ala. | Alabama State pounded out seven home runs in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division clinching victory over Alabama A&M on Friday night, winning 17-3 at James Clemens High School.
Alabama State (30-22, 21-7 SWAC) clinched the division with a three-game lead with just one conference game remaining with 30 NCAA Division I victories, and eight conference series wins. The Hornets swept six conference series, won two non-conference series, and posted a 21-6 record at home this season.
The Hornets pounded out 15 hits in the win led by a pair of players with three hits each including
Chris Lewis (Alabaster, Ala.) who finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI – all while hitting a pair of home runs (his first of the season).
Hunter May (Slidell, La.) finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI while connecting for a double and home run.
Corey King (Lithonia, Ga.) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while
Jabronski Williams (Troy, Ala.) finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI with both hits being home runs.
Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.) finished 2-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored including a home run, while
Cristopher DeGuzman (Fajarado, PR) went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and runs scored (including a home run).
McIntosh (4-4), the first of three pitchers used in the game, picked up the win working 5.0 innings and allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with four strikeouts.
Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR) and
Payton Harris (Hattiesburg, Miss.) came in for the final two innings of scoreless relief.
How It Happened
- T1 | DeGuzman started the scoring with a two-run home run to score McIntosh before Lewis hit a solo shot to center (3-0, Alabama State).
- T2 | McIntosh singled to left to score Trenton Jamison (Atlanta, Ga.) to grow the lead (4-0, Alabama State).
- T4 | Williams hit a solo shot to right center before McIntosh hit a three-run home run to left to grow the lead. May hit the third home run of the inning for Alabama State (9-0, Alabama State).
- B4 | Trevor Berkemeyer hit a sacrifice fly, before Tommy Easley singled to right center to score another run. Dillon Roop drove in a run on an RBI groundout (9-3, Alabama State).
- T5 | King singled to short to drive in a run before McIntosh reached on a fielder's choice (11-3, Alabama State).
- T6 | Lewis hit his second home run of the game driving in May (13-3, Alabama State).
- T7 | May doubled to left to drive in DeGuzman before Dilan Espinal (Canovanas, PR) recorded an RBI groundout. The last run of the game came off the bat of Williams courtesy of a two-run home run (17-3, Alabama State).
