BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State had several student-athletes place inside the top eight, including a trio of winners, at the season-opening BSC Panthers Indoor Icebreaker at the Birmingham Crossplex on Friday.
Justus Trainer won his first event of the year, the 60-meter dash, in a time of 6.82 seconds. He finished just ahead of Cagan Campbell of Samford at 6.83 seconds and Elijah Williams of Shorter at 6.88 seconds. He was joined at the top of the podium by
Khabeeba Mills in the 1000 meters in a time of 2:35.94. In the same race,
Jon Coulter finished fourth (2:37.69) and
Amos Beadle seventh (2:41.83).
Xavier Clarke claimed gold in the long jump with a distance of 7.21 meters (23-08.00) and finished sixth in the triple jump at 13.70 meters (44-11.50).
Sterling Shumpert finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.80 meters (22-03.75) for the Hornets.
The men wrapped up competition on Friday night winning their first 4x400-meter race of the year with a time of 3:16.51, while also finishing seventh at 3:22.76. The Hornets finished ahead of Lee (3:16.97) and Memphis (3:17.56).
On the women's side,
Shamia Jones won her first race of the season in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:56.90.
Wilnaya Taylor rebounded from the prelims in the 60-meter hurdles to finish third at 8.90 seconds, while teammate,
Rasunek Tyler-Thompson finished seventh at 10.70 seconds.
Shakayla Riggins finished sixth in the long jump at 5.49 meters (18-00.25).
The women's 4x400-meter relay won its first race of the season, pulling away from the field with a time of 3:54.28. They finished three seconds ahead of Christian Brothers (3:57.84) and four seconds ahead of third-place Lee. The Lady Hornets had a second team finish fifth in the race with a time of 3:59.40, finishing less than a second out of fourth (Tulane).
