BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State had several top-five finishes in its third indoor meet of the season and second of the calendar year at the Samford Open on Saturday inside the Birmingham Crossplex.

Rasunek Tyler-Thompson finished atop the medal stand in the 60-meters with a time of 7.53 seconds, topping her mark of 7.63 to qualify for the finals. She finished 0.08 seconds ahead of second-place Immaculate Danial of Southeastern Louisiana (7.61).

Tyler-Thompson was joined atop the medal stand by
Vaughn DeVaughn III for the second consecutive week with a time of 8.08 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. He finished 0.05 seconds ahead of second-place Dwight Henry of UAPB (8.13) and 0.06 ahead of Wilson McClain of UAH (8.14). He also finished fourth in the 200-meters in a time of 21.93 seconds.

Nauti'Ka Robinson finished atop the medal stand for the first time this season with a time of 24.94 seconds in the 200-meters. Robinson finished 0.32 seconds ahead of Erica Grant of Texas Southern and Machaeda Linton of William Carey.

Wilnaya Taylor finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles on the women's side with a time of 8.96 seconds, finishing 0.13 seconds behind Arryona Simmons of UAPB.
Quincy Penn finished third in the 400-meters in 55.94 seconds, just 0.40 seconds behind second-place Joy Abu of William Carey and 0.56 seconds behind the winner, Indya Jackson of Southeastern Louisiana.

Meanwhile,
Shamia Jones finished third in the women's one mile with a time of 5:11.50. She was the second collegiate student-athlete to cross the line, finishing just three seconds behind Haley Hall of Mississippi College.

Meanwhile, in the field events,
Jaiya Burchell finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 11.23 meters (36-10.25).
Ja'Nyiah Davis finished fourth in her first competition of the year in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters (5-01.00).

The Hornets capped off the meet with a fourth-place finish by the men's 4x400-meter relay team in 3:25.24, while the women finished second with a time of 3:58.52.

Up Next
Alabama State returns to action on Feb. 2 at the South Carolina Invitational hosted by the Gamecocks in Columbia (S.C.). The meet will be the final competition before the conference championships in mid-February.
