Volleyball Sweeps Past Alcorn

FINAL STATS

LORMAN, Miss --  Alabama States' seniors Brena Wheeler and Jessica Lindsey along with junior Asia Manning led the way with nine kills apiece as the Alabama State volleyball team defeated Alcorn State, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19), on Friday evening at E.E. Simmons Gym.

“The ladies did really well tonight even in front of a slightly hostile environment,” ASU head coach Sonia Price said after the match.  “Brena, Jessica and Asia are the catalysts of our team and with them up front we can continue to have tremendous balance because teams have too many options to defend.”

Lindsey recorded a team best .900 attack percentage in the middle and also added six blocks (one solo, five assist), while Wheeler had a.529 attack percentage from the outside.

With the victory, Alabama State improved to 11-15 overall and 2-2 in SWAC matches, while Alcorn fell to 0-14 and 0-4 in league contests with the loss.

Sophomore Roselande Corneille had nine digs and helped the Lady Hornets passing contribute to the teams .346 hitting percentage marking the third-straight match ASU topped .300.  The Lady Hornets defense limited Alcorn to a 0.51 attack percentage and only 30 kills, including a sparse six in the first match.

“I thought Roselande had a fair match for us tonight.  She was all over the court, and even though she only shows nine digs on the stats sheet, she was far more active than that in this victory.

“Midway through the second game, I think everything finally clicked for us and we started going on all cylinders – both offensively and defensively.  Overall, this was a great performance against Alcorn, “Price said.

For Alcorn, Courtney Small recorded 12 kills to pace the Braves' offense.  Donna Kelly had a team-high nine digs, while Kesha Roberson added seven kills.

In the first game, Alabama State built an early 9-1 lead advancing to at least 15 points at one point closing out the first set 25-13.

In the second set, Alcorn jumped out early – 11-7 before ASU came back with a 5-0 run, to go ahead 21-16.  From that point, ASU controlled the play and closed out the game with a 25-21 rally.

In the final game, ASU got out to another early 7-1 lead assisted by a Wheelers' service ace and two Lindsey kills along with a solo block, to end with a final 25-19 victory.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 26, for senior night when they host the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M in Lockhart Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
