Lady Hornets Volleyball Falls to Jackson State, 3-0

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State University Lady Hornets team dropped to 1-2 in SWAC play Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-19,25-20,25-9) to the Jackson State Lady Tigers.  Alabama State's overall mark now stands at 7-13, while Jackson State pushed its record to 12-9 and 3-0 in conference play.

Jackson State took the early advantage in the first game, pushing its lead to as many as eight points, 0-8.  The Lady Hornets responded by making a late run reaching within three points 10-13.  Jackson then took a six point advance defeating ASU 25-19 in set one.

Looking to complete its miraculous comeback in the second game, setter Ana Pego stepped back for the serve in hopes of giving Bama State the early 2-0 lead over Jackson State.  Jackson's States sophomore middle blocker Kameron Boggan denied the Lady Hornets attempt when she recorded her fifth kill of the frame.  Jackson State and Alabama State traded the next four points, but the Tigers got consecutive kills from freshman outside hitter Chyna Coleman and junior middle blocker Donisha Dunn for the 25-20 win.

The third game was a struggle for Alabama State.  The Tigers tremendous height advantage was beginning to take its toll on Bama State.  Jackson State's Daedra Carline served the next 13 times ending the frame with an attack error my senior Jessica Lindsey.  The Tigers also out-hit the Lady Hornets .469 to .081 in game three en route to a 25-9 victory.

Lady Hornets senior Brena Wheeler led the ladies with seven kills and seven digs on the afternoon.  Freshman outside hitter Sandreika Wilkins assisted Wheeler with six kills and one service ace.  Pego turned in another impressive performance for Alabama State with two kills, 25 assists, and five digs.  Junior outside hitter Asia Manning also turned in a solid performance with five kills and eight digs.  Defensive specialist Roselande Cornielle averaged her usual 23 digs.

As a team the Lady Hornets hit a season-low .043 clip, while allowing Jackson to attack at .303, the highest mark they have given up this year.  The Tigers also recorded five blocks on the afternoon to Alabama State's zero.

Alabama State will travel to Clark Atlanta for its next contest, with this match taking place on Oct 11.  They will return home to face eastern division rival Alcorn State on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in Lockhart Gymnasium.
