The Alabama State volleyball team ended the 2011 season with a heartbreaking, 3-1 loss to Jackson State on Sunday at the Alario Center in Westwego, La. The Lady Hornets finish the season with a 15-22 overall record, including a 4-4 mark against SWAC competition.
“This was another tough match for us,” Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. “We played hard and the girls did a great job, but we just couldn't finish. In the last set Jackson State had some big blocks that took us out of our game and we weren't able to settle down after that. I think this was a good season although we only had an eight man team. I am already excited about next year, because I know we are going to be coming back bigger and stronger.”
Maya Bell and Alex Chace combine for 21 kills to lead Alabama State. Bell had a team-high 13 kills, while Chace posted eight kills, eight digs and hit for .412.
Roselande Corneille and
Asia Manning added five kills each to round out the 36 total kills for ASU. Corneille had a team high of 13 digs. Setter senior
Ana Pego in her last game as an ASU Lady Hornet handed out 29 assists and added eight digs, and two service aces, while
Luiza Griz had a second team-best 12 digs.
Jackson State's Christine Edwards had a team-best 17 kills and Chyna Coleman added 15 for the Tigers.
LaToya Clark recorded a match high of 46 assists in the four-game match.
The Tigers won the first two games by the scores of 25-19 and 25-17. The Lady Hornets came out of the intermission on fire and registered a 25-23 win in game three to pull within one game.
In game four ASU wasn't able to carry over its momentum from game three and fell 25-9 in the final set with Jackson moving on to the Championship game.
The Tigers hit an impressive .306 in the match with 52 kills as well as the blocking battle 8-4. ASU held a slight 7-6 edge in service aces falling 3-1 in the semi-final match.
