Box Score

MONTGOMERY—Alabama State University's volleyball team continued their weekend full of games hosting California State University Bakersfield Saturday night at Lockhart Gymnasium.

Chelsey Scott had nine kills and Rachel Smith added seven but it was not enough as ASU dropped a 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 22-25) decision to CSUB.

Debora Araujo led the visitors with a game-high 14 kills and Goncalves had 32 assists.  Mariah Alvidrez had 10 digs.

The Roadrunners started the game with a 25-19 win in the first set.  ASU actually led 11-7 before the visitors were able to go on a 10-1 run and turn that deficit into a 17-11 lead.  It was a run the Lady Hornets could not overcome, even though they did come back and cut the lead to 18-16.

Araujo led CSUB with five kills in the set and they hit .400.  Scott had four kills for ASU, but they only hit .103 in the set.

Set two saw seven ties before the visiting Road Runners went on a 10-5 run to build an 18-13 lead.  Again, it was too much of a run for the Lady Hornets to overcome in the 25-20 loss.

Araujo and teammate Molly O'Hagan each had four kills as UCSB hit .250 in the set.  UCSB was also big at the net stating six block assists against ASU.

Myle Marshall had two kills in ASU's .171 hitting attack.  Errors plagued ASU with 11 total hitting errors in the set.

The third set was close from start to finish as the two teams combined for 13 ties and seven lead changes, but it was CSUB that was able to close the game out by outscoring ASU 4-1 down the stretch to turn a 22-21 deficit into a 25-23 win.

The Road Runners big two Araujo and O'Hagan had five kills each with the team hitting .400 in the game.  O'Hagan had the final two kills in the set to end the game.

ASU hit .200 in the set with Scott putting down three kills.

“We know what to do and how to do it, but we continue to make too many mistakes and give our opponents too many points,” Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said.  “Even though we got in early this morning from our game last night at Jackson, I thought we had great energy.  Once we can learn to play through our mistakes we have a chance to do some good things.”

ASU (4-21) will host the Road Runners (9-10) again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Lockhart Gymnasium.
