JACKSON, Miss.—Alabama State University's volleyball season came to an end in the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament with a 3-1 (15-25, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25) loss to Jackson State University.
Rachel Smith had 11 kills to lead the Lady Hornets, but ASU only hit .129 as a team. Like yesterday's loss to JSU, the Lady Hornets committed 38 errors during the game that contributed to the loss.
Khryssnee Madison had nine kills and
Latoya Ellington added a career and team-high four total blocks.
The turning point of the game came in the third set. After the two teams had split the first two sets, ASU held an 8-4 lead with all of the momentum. Following a JSU timeout the Lady Tigers outscored ASU 16-4 to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 16-12 lead, and from there JSU went on to win the set and carried the momentum into the fourth set.
Christine Edwards had a game-high 19 kills to lead JSU and completed a double-double with 12 digs.
Both teams played excellent defense with ASU compiling 41 digs and 8 total blocks. JSU had 45 digs and 13 total blocks.
“I was really disappointed with how we came out and played today,” Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. “We had everything to gain and nothing to lose and we played very tentative and you can't do that against a team like JSU.”
“I have said it before, but this was the youngest team I have ever fielded but we have a lot of work to do,” Lucas-White said. “This off-season will be dedicated to getting bigger, stronger and faster and we will accomplish those things.”
