Box Score
The Alabama State University volleyball team took over sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference's (SWAC) East Division with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20) win at Alabama A&M. The win was ASU's ninth consecutive win.

"To come on the road and defeat a team like A&M is a hard thing to do, but the girls found a way to do it," Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said. "A&M is a very good team and they showed that tonight. Even when we would make a little run they would come right back and get back in it."

Myla Marshall led ASU with 12 kills and hit .400 in the game. She was joined in double digits in kills by Tiara Kelley who had 10 and hit .389 as the Lady Hornets hit .269 as a team.

Brooke Beasley had 20 assists and Ellyn Jones added 12 while Luiza Griz had 10 digs.

ASU's defense once again shined as they held AAMU to a .120 hitting percentage while recording eight total blocks. Marshall and Amber Bennett led the way with two blocks each.

"I am happy to get the win, but I thought we played ugly tonight and A&M had a lot to do with that," Lucas-White said. "We have plenty to work on to improve, but it is still good to get a win."

The first game saw the two team's battle through seven tie scores before ASU went on a run. Trailing 7-6, the Lady Hornets would score five consecutive points to go up 11-7 and they would never trail again. Bennett ended the first set with her third kill in the 25-19 set one win. Marshall led the way with five kills.

Set two saw ASU keep the momentum and jump out to a 4-0 lead. After an AAMU timeout the Lady Bulldogs slowly got back into the game and evened the score at seven and again at eight.

After that ASU scored three straight to take the lead and they would never trail again, but that does not mean the set was easy as AAMU evened the score at 21 and 22 before ASU would score three of the final four points. Ellyn Jones' kill finished the set with ASU's slim 25-23 win.

The third set of the game featured nine tie scores with the last being at 19. From there ASU outscored the hosts 6-1 to finish the set and game at 25-20.

With the win the Lady Hornets move to 14-12 overall and remain undefeated in conference action at 4-0. AAMU falls to 4-16 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

The Lady Hornets will be back on the road for a rare Sunday game when they travel to Savannah, Ga., where they will face Savannah State University Sunday, Oct. 20, at noon.
