Box Score
Alabama State's volleyball team hit the road for a non-conference match at Savannah State and came home with their 10
th consecutive victory after their 3-0 (25-18, 25-7, 25-19 ) win over the Lady Tigers.
"It is tough to get in late Friday night and make a long trip on Saturday for a Sunday game," Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. "We certainly did not play as well as we could have, but I give the girls credit for picking up the win."
It was a well-balanced team effort for ASU with
Rachel Smith leading the team with eight kills.
Myla Marshall and
Amber Bennett had seven each and
Khryssnee Madison added five as ASU hit .391 for the game.
Brooke Beasley had 14 assists and
Ellyn Jones had 12. Beasley also led the team with nine digs.
ASU held SSU to a .081 hitting percentage and had eight total blocks for the day. Bennett had three and LaToya Ellington had two to lead the Lady Hornets.
ASU (15-12) did not start the day off as well as they would have liked in the first set falling behind 6-2 and 8-4 before they got going. Trailing 7-9, ASU went on a 7-0 run to turn the two point deficit into a 14-9 lead, never looking back.
Rachel Smith had three kills in the first set to lead ASU to the 25-18 win, ending the set on an Ellington block.
The second set was all ASU. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 7-2 lead and sped away from Savannah State in the 25-7 win. Bennett and Smith had four kills each in the set, while Marshall added three.
The third set saw the Lady Hornets lead from start to finish and led by as much as 21-9 before play began to get sloppy. Savannah State (0-24) actually came back to get as close as 24-19 before Marshall ended the set at 25-19 with a kill.
"You have to give Savannah a lot of credit," Lucas-White said. "They played hard against us and never went away. They made some good runs against us, especially in the first and third sets."
Lucas-White added, "We have a lot to work on this week in practice before we hit the road to play against two teams from the West Division in Texas Southern and Prairie View. Texas Southern leads the West Division so we will need to show a lot of improvement during this week of practice."
ASU is off until Friday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Texas to face Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. and Texas Southern on Saturday, Oct. 26, also at 7 p.m.
