Alabama State's volleyball team made it a clean sweep through the Southern University Invitational with 3-0 wins over Grambling State and host Southern in today's final games. ASU finished the two-day event winning all four games.
ASU defeated Grambling 25-15, 25-19 and 25-16 to open their action today.
Amber Bennett was outstanding in the three-set game with 14 kills in 20 attacks without committing an error, finishing the game with a .700 hitting percentage. Bennett also registered five block assists in the game.
Myla Marshall hit .267 with seven kills in 15 attempts and also had three block assists.
Ellyn Jones had 15 assists and
Brooke Beasley added 12.
Luiza Griz had eight digs.
In ASU's 25-11, 25-22, 25-19 win over Southern, Marshall was the offensive leader with 11 kills in 13 attacks. She did not commit an error and finished the game with a .846 hitting percentage.
Dragana Cvoric and Bennett each added seven kills as ASU finished the game hitting .219. Beasley had a game-high 23 assists while Cvoric, Griz and
Jamie Coleman had seven digs each.
ASU opened play on Friday defeating Alcorn State 3-0 and Prairie View A&M 3-2. It was ASU's third five-set game of the season, but it was their first five-set win.
"I am proud of how we played both days of this tournament," Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. "Winning six straight games gives us a lot of momentum heading into our home games this week. We still must remain focused because we have a lot of work to do. We made a lot of errors during this weekend and we must continue to improve in order to accomplish our goals."
Amber Bennett and
Myla Marshall were both named to the All-Tournament team.
"Amber and Myla both had great weekends for us," Lucas-White said. "They are both getting better and better and we need for them to continue to show that improvement and be leaders for us."
ASU has now won a season-high six consecutive games and moves to 11-12 on the season. After 11 straight games on the road, ASU returns home Tuesday, Oct. 8 to host Stillman College at 7 p.m.
