Alabama State's volleyball team won their seventh consecutive game with a 3-0 win over Stillman College in non-conference volleyball action at Lockhart Gymnasium and in the process, evened their record at 12-12.
"I am real happy (about seven consecutive wins)," Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said. "They are playing very confident right now and that is the key to our young women is their confidence. They feel like they are in the system and they are in a good place right now."
Amber Bennett led the way with 13 kills in 19 total attacks only committing one error. She finished the game hitting a game-high .632.
Tiara Kelly had nine kills and Myla Marshall added seven while the Lady Hornets finished the game hitting .366 as a team. Ellyn Jones had a game-high 19 assists and Brooke Beasley added 11. Jamie Coleman had a game-high 12 digs.
It was all ASU in the first set of the night in a 25-4 win. After two early kills from LaToya Ellington the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 14-3 lead before Stillman could get a timeout. From there Bennett took over and added three kills as ASU hit .455 for the game.
The second game was much closer as there were eight ties over the course of the set. Stillman actually led by three points several times during the set and 14-11 was the final three point lead. ASU fought back to even the score at 17 on a kill from Bennett and it was all ASU from there on. The Lady Hornets outscored the visitors 8-1 over the final nine points to pull out the win.
Bennett finished the set with six kills while Kelley added four. ASU only hit .195 in the set, but was able to hold Stillman to only a .059 percentage.
ASU finished the game with a 25-6 win in the third set. ASU jumped out scoring 14 of the sets first 18 points on their way to the game decider.
"They have grown three fold (since the start of the season) and they haven't peaked yet, they are getting close but they haven't peaked yet and that's a good thing" Lucas-White said. "This weekend I saw them transform before my eyes and it was amazing. It's fun and it's very relaxing. We give them a couple of keys and keep them encouraged and they are going after it. They are fearless."
The Lady Hornets will jump back into Southwestern Athletic Conference action Friday, Oct. 11 when they host defending SWAC Champion Jackson State at 7 p.m.
