Alabama State University's volleyball team will begin the second half of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) schedule Saturday Nov. 2, at 3 p.m., on the home court of the reigning SWAC Champions, Jackson State University.
Â
The Lady Hornets head into the game with a 16-14 overall record, but more importantly 4-0 in conference action.
Â
"I think we feel good about the 4-0 record, but I think we need to forget about what we've accomplished and say it's a new season," Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. "We need to start over, we need to get that hungry mentality and right now the best thing that happened to us is Texas Southern beat us at Texas Southern. I think it humbled us a bit and it got the girls back on the hunt, it got them focused."
Â
The month of October was good to the Lady Hornets as they finished the month with a 9-2 record. Looking back on the month, Lucas-White was very pleased with what she saw in this team.
Â
"The thing that pleased me the most about the way they played was they were so resilient," Lucas-White said. "They never gave up. I don't care who we played, I've never seen my team lay down to anybody all year. They have fought hard every day, every match, every minute. They have that mindset and I think that's special."
Â
ASU has the same leaders they have had since the season started and that is
Amber Bennett leading the team in kills (282), kills per set (2.76), hitting percentage (.319), solo blocks (24), block assists (66) and total blocks (90).
Â
Myla Marshall is right behind her hitting .310 with 183 kills and 68 total blocks (12 BS, 56 BA).
Â
ASU has two other players that are beginning to play well in
Rachel Smith and
Tiara Kelley. Smith, one of the team leaders in kills a year ago, is now fourth on the team in kills with 125 and has her hitting percentage up to .119, and is coming off a week which saw her named the SWAC's Offensive Player of the Week. Kelley is second on the team in kills with 222 and in kills per set (2.22). She also has her percentage up to .211.
Â
Brooke Beasley was named the SWAC Setter of the Week last week coming off consecutive 30-assists games. She had 31 at Prairie View A&M and a season-high 38 at Texas Southern. She leads the team with 491 assists and 4.81 assist per set. Her assist partner
Ellyn Jones has 443 assists and averages 4.39 per set.
Â
Luiza Griz was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the SWAC last week. She totaled 26 digs during the week and has a team-high 290 this season and has almost 1,100 for her career.
Â
In the earlier game this season between the two teams, ASU was able to beat JSU 3-1 (25-13, 28-30, 25-10, 25-16) back on Oct. 11 in Montgomery.
