Myla Marshall had 13 kills and a career-high eight blocks to lead Alabama State to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 26-24) win at Mississippi Valley State to complete a weekend sweep to begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The three games featured 25 ties and 15 lead changes as the two teams battled back and forth. ASU (7-12/2-0 SWAC) only hit .202 as a team, but Marshall led the way with her .526 percentage.
Tiara Kelley chipped in with nine kills and
Amber Bennett added eight.
Brooke Beasley had a game-high 19 assists and teammate
Ellyn Jones had 16.
Luiza Griz continues her solid work as the libero with a game-high 12 digs.
ASU's defense continued their solid play as MVSU (6-13/0-2 SWAC) could only hit .056 as a team. ASU had 13 blocks with Marshall's eight (1 BS, 7 BA) leading the way.
Dragana Cvoric had four blocks and
Rachel Smith, Kelley and Bennett had three each.
"We are happy to get away from the opening weekend with two wins," Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. "It is a great way to start the season, but we cannot be satisfied. We made way too many unforced errors, so we have plenty to work on this week."
"I am proud of how the girls fought through three close games, especially the third game. We have another big week coming up so we will get back to work this week."
ASU will travel to Baton Rouge Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5, to play in the Southern Invitational. ASU opens play on Friday facing Alcorn State at 10 a.m. and Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. Saturday's opponents will be Grambling State at noon and host Southern at 4 p.m.
