Box Score Staring the Alabama State women's volleyball team in their face was the prospect of pulling out the—usually difficult—multiple-match road sweep.
Mission accomplished. Â
The Lady Hornets made good against all three opponents on the Mississippi Madness trip and took care of Mississippi Valley State 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) for their fourth consecutive SWAC victory on Saturday to remain unscathed in conference play.
Junior
Myla Marshall put forth perhaps her most dominating performance of the season with season-highs of 18 kills and a .654 hitting percentage. She only committed a single error and added four digs and three blocks for good measure.Â
The Memphis, Tenn. native attacked early and kept on attacking throughout the match as she compiled 26 total attacks--her highest total since a match against Murray State in late August.
"Myla dominated the match," said Alabama State women's volleyball coach
Penny Lucas-White.  "There's absolutely nothing more that you could ask for from her. She did a fantastic job in the middle."Â
The defense was on its' match too. Three players reached double figures in digs as senior
Erika Thompson and sophomore
Scout Wonsang led the way with 15 digs apiece. Junior
Rachel Smith neared a double-double effort with 10 digs and eight kills.Â
 Â
"We are starting to hit on all cylinders," said coach Lucas-White. "The team is doing whatever it takes to get past the opponent. They did a great job serving yesterday and today it was our defense of Erika [Thompson] and
Scout Wonsang, who kept the ball alive. The team is in sync and focused. The SWAC is very important to them and we've benefited from playing our early schedule against some tough competition."    Â
The 1-2 punch of seniors
Ellyn Jones and
Brooke Beasley nearly split setting duties down the middle as Beasley racked up a team-high 18 assists and Jones picked up 17 assists.
Transfer
Lorena Rosario turned in her most efficient performance of the season with nine kills on 14 total attacks (a .500 hitting percentage). It's the first time that she has hit the .500 mark with at least 10 total attacks.Â
"Lorena has picked up her entire game and she's able to attack too," coach Lucas-White added.
The Devilettes (2-16 overall, 0-3 SWAC) were led by Ilaisha Hale, who had a team-high 10 kills.Â
Next, Alabama State (8-15 overall, 4-0 SWAC) will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take part in the Southern Invitational.Â
The Lady Hornets will play Alcorn State on Friday at 11 a.m. and then Texas Southern at 3 p.m. Both matches will not count towards the SWAC standings.Â
