Box Score Alabama State had double digit kills from
Myla Marshall (18) and
Chelsey Scott (16) to lead the Lady Hornets to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23) win over Jackson State.
"They are continuing to grow and they are enjoying growing every practice, every match. I just think for the girls right now it's great that they have each other's back," stated Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White. "I have said it from the beginning this is the team that never gives up."
"They are never going to walk away and they are never going to lie down. That's the good thing about my kids they are never going to lie down."
ASU hit .311 for the game and held Jackson State's offense to only a .296 hitting percentage for the game. The one-two punch of
Ellyn Jones (24) and
Brooke Beasley (23) combined for 47 assists. Jones had seven service aces as ASU finished with 12.
JSU (6-19/3-3 SWAC) took set one with a 25-21 win. The Lady Tigers had 12 kills with a .381 hitting percentage as they held the Lady Hornets to only .100%.
The Lady Hornets showed more poise in the second set as they hit for .314% and held the Tigers to .139%, winning the set 25-18. Marshall had six kills in the set with the team hitting 16. Beasley lead the team with seven assists' with the team total being 13.
"They came right out after the loss and just kept going," Lucas-White said. "I think once we adjusted our block and they understood what we needed to take away we were right back in it again."
ASU saved the best offensive game for the third set, hitting .571 on their way to a 25-19 win. Marshall had five kills, while Scott added four. The Lady Hornets had 14 kills in 21 total attacks with only two errors.
The fourth set was a hard fought set that came down to the wire for the two teams. "Jackson State gave us a good, tough fourth set and fought very, very hard," Lucas-White said.
The teams were close in hitting percentage with Alabama State hitting for .333 and Jackson State hitting for .303. Again the combination of Marshall and Jones led the team in kills and assists'.
"Myla really showed up tonight for us, she is an exciting player to watch," stated Lucas-White. "Her emotion, passion, and love for the game makes her a vocal leader on the court. She loves the intensity of competitive games like tonight, it drives her and feeds in to her will to win."
ASU (11-16/5-0 SWAC) has a week off before heading up the interstate to their next big match, Alabama A&M. That game is set for
