Volleyball returns home to square off against in-state opponent Troy

Alabama State women's volleyball team returns home after a three-match road swing in Tucson, Ariz. at the Arizona Invitational.

The round trip accounted for 3,200 miles and matches against some of the top teams in the country including then No. 23 Arizona.

It gave ASU (2-5 overall, 2-2 home) strength in confidence going forward as the Lady Hornets will be looking to get back on track when it hosts Troy University (7-1 overall, 0-1 road) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Lockhart Gymnasium in a nonconference tilt.

Junior Myla Marshall has continued to be a consistent presence around the net for Alabama State as the junior middle hitter tallied 16 kills and seven blocks out west.  Marshall leads the team in kills with 59 and blocks with 22.  Her .321 hitting percentage is second on the team.

"It's always great to travel and play against teams from different conferences," Marshall said.  "It showed that we could hang with them.  Without struggle, there is no progress .  I think that with everything that we learned from this weekend, we'll be able to apply in the future.  I think that we came out on fire, but we just need to keep up that killer instinct.  We have to play fearless.  You never know what ball you can get down if you just keep trying and playing hard."

Dorsey, a 6-foot freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, has become coach Penny Lucas-White's most efficient producer.  Of Dorsey's 22 sets that she has played in, she has put down 23 kills against just seven errors on 50 total attacks (.320).

Senior setter Ellyn Jones led the Lady Hornets with 39 assists over the weekend and has increased her total to a team-best 120 assists on the season.  She also leads the team in aces with seven.

Senior libero Erika Thompson has stepped up her defensive game with a season-high 13 digs against Cal State Northridge last Friday.  The performance came just hours before a 12-dig effort against Arizona earlier in the day.  Thompson finished with 31 digs in the tournament to raise her total to 41.  Thompson now ranks tied for third on the team in digs only behind Scout Wonsang (50) and Rachel Smith (44).

The Trojans come in hot having outscored their opponents by more than a 100-point margin thus far this season (711-594).  Troy is led by Blair Winston, Madeleine Bouillion and Marija Zelenovic, who have combined for 247 of the team's 376 kills (65.6% of the team's production).
