MONTGOMERY, ALA. – After an impressive 3-1 exhibition victory against AUM on Saturday, the Alabama State women's soccer team will look to build upon that when it hosts Georgia State on Friday at 6 p.m. from the ASU Soccer Complex on the first day of Fan Fest.
Fan Fest will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday with fans open to use the RV parking lots.Â
Day one will include the soccer match and will continue into Saturday with a 7 a.m. beginning time for tent tailgating, 2 p.m. for the ASU Stadium gates to open, and a 3:15 p.m. football scrimmage.Â
Women's soccer players along with other fall sports teams will join in on a meet and greet with fans at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday in conjunction with an autograph session and distribution of schedule posters for the 2015 season.Â
Freshman midfielder
Larissa White was a game-changer in the exhibition win, coming up with all three of ASU's goals in the victory.Â
Junior
Ariela Lewis added an assist on one of the goals to give Lewis her first point in nearly two seasons after missing all, but one match, in the 2014 season.
  Â
In net,
Gianna Guyot and
Zaria Maynard combined to allow just one goal for the Lady Hornets. Â
It will be the first meeting in school history between Georgia State and Alabama State in soccer.Â
"They play in a very good conference," said ASU head women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith. Â
"They've got quality players and a good coaching staff so I know they're going to be prepared and want to get their season off a good start as well. Knowing the program the way that I do [Smith previously coached at Georgia State], it should be a quality, hard opponent for us. That's why the preseason game was so important for us to see where we were and what we needed to work on for the opener."
The Lady Panthers are coming off a 4-3 exhibition defeat to Charlotte this past Saturday.Â
Georgia State ran a record of 6-10-1 last season as member of the Sun Belt Conference.Â
GSU did not allow more than two goals in a match all season in 2014.Â
Junior goalkeeper Brie Haynes was stingy in net with 58 saves, a 0.83 goals against average and six shutouts.Â
"Having low-scoring games brings forth that they are very organized and do not concede a lot, Smith said." That comes from organization. Offensively, they do the things they need to do to stay in games. They're going to be difficult for us to break down and create opportunities in front of the goal."Â
White became the third active Lady Hornet to collect a hat trick in a match last Saturday, joining twin sisters
Aaliyah Lewis and Ar. Lewis to accomplish the feat.
"When you recruit players, you envision the contributions that they can make to your team," Smith said.Â
"I knew she was a quality player. She's done the things that we needed her to do and she's definitely doing what I expected her to do for us; being another option for scoring, anchor our midfield and distribute the ball and she did all of those things."
