Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  –
Krysta Medearis put down a game-high 13 kills, and
Briana Dorsey,
Candace Martin and
Bayle Bennett offered plenty of back up on the front line as the Alabama State women's volleyball team rolled to their sixth consecutive victory with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) SWAC victory against Arkansas –Pine Bluff at Philander Smith College's Mims Gymnasium. Â
Â
Dorsey was the most efficient Lady Hornet though, hitting .615, to go along with 10 kills and three total blocks while Martin added eight kills on a .412 hitting percentage and Bennett had nine kills on a .333.Â
As a whole, the team hit .366 for the match and left the Lady Lions searching for answers on the defensive side of the ball.Â
Similar to yesterday's straight sets win at Grambling State, Alabama State (7-7 overall, 4-0 SWAC) cruised to victories in the first and third sets by pinpointing their jumps with big spikes.Â
The second set had more back-and-forth action as service errors crept into the set for the Lady Hornets as UAPB was able to lock up the score at 16 all.
Alabama State committed seven service errors and Kendalle Howard led the Lions (0-11 overall, 0-4 SWAC) with a team-high eight kills to make the set a bit more competitive.  Â
But, the Lady Hornets regrouped down the stretch with tide turning plays from both Bennett and Martin as the two combined for kills and gave ASU a 21-20 advantage.Â
Dorsey finished them off with a hard hit spike that found some floor to give ASU the set 25-23.Â
Setters
Kori Kutsch and
Justus Tuiolosega nearly split work setting up the hitters by gathering 20 and 17 assists respectively.
Defensively,
Jamie Coleman led the team with 11 digs.
"We are starting off well, but I think we are still coming out lagging a bit when that second set starts," said ASU head coach
Penny Lucas-White, whose teams improved to 26-2 in conference play over the past three plus seasons. Â
"So, we'll be looking to improve upon that going forward, but we are hitting at a high percentage. You look at Bri [Dorsey] today. She hit over .600. So, I think we are coming together." Â
Â
Next, the Lady Hornets will return home to host Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 7 p.m.
