MONTGOMERY, Ala. | After playing four consecutive matches on the road, the Alabama State University volleyball team will return home for four consecutive matches beginning Tuesday night against the University of South Alabama.
The match is scheduled for 6:30 pm inside Lockhart Gymnasium, and admission is free.
South Alabama (2-3) enters the match after having won a pair matches on Saturday at the Jaguar Invitational at Jag Gym. The Jaguars defeated McNeese State in straight sets
(25-13, 25-16, 25-14), and capped the tournament with a win over Southern Miss (6-2) in five sets. South Alabama, Southern Miss and Alabama each went 2-1 on the weekend, but the Golden Eagles won the tournament via tiebreaker. USA leads the Sun Belt Conference in blocks with an average of 2.88 blocks per set, and sophomore middle blocker Kelley Hartman leads the SBC in blocks with 1.62 blocks per set after collecting 13 total blocks in eight sets last weekend at Tulane. The Jaguars rank second in the league in service aces, averaging 1.88 service aces per set. Sophomore Ashlyn Roberts ranks tied for sixth in the SBC in service aces with an average of 0.50 per set.
Meanwhile, Alabama State (2-4) started off the season by winning the first two matches before dropping their last four matches – all on the road. The team is at, or near the top in every statistical category in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Lady Hornets lead the conference in assists (10.17/per set), kills (11.22/per set) and attack percentage (.192). Senior
Briana Dorsey is second in the conference in attack percentage (.405), while her teammate
Krysta Medearis is fourth (.245).
Ni'yesha Brown leads the conference in kills (2.72/per set), while Medearis is fourth (2.44/per set) and Dorsey sixth (2.22/set).
Kori Kutsch leads the conference in assists at 5.72 per set, while Brown leads the conference in service aces at 0.39 per set. Although the Lady Hornets dropped their matches at the North Harbour Marriott Invitational this weekend, Dorsey earned All-Tournament honors for her performance.
