MONTGOMERY, ALA. | Alabama State will travel to Huntsville, Ala. Thursday night to face Alabama A&M with first place in the Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) conference hanging in the balance.
A bevy of Alabama State players have reached milestones in recent weeks, including
Kayla Torres (700 career digs) and
Krysta Medearis (800 career kills). Senior
Candace Martin, the conference leader in total blocks (102), is closing in on career-block No. 300. Junior
Bayle' Bennett, who has grabbed 101 kills in her last ten matches, needs to put away 16 attacks to reach 900 career kills.
Alabama A&M – currently with a two game lead over Alabama State in the SWAC – leads the conference in attack percentage (.225), assists per set (11.07) and kills per set (11.81). The Bulldogs are led by Maya Evans' sparkling .405 attack percentage and 74 total blocks. Outside hitters Terra Brooks (294), Alana Cox (290) and Jaelin Gant (281) rank second, third and fifth in kills per set, respectively. Setter Megan Evans leads all players with an average of 8.94 assists per set.
The Bulldogs escaped Lockhart Gymnasium with a 3-1 win back on October 4th after the Lady Hornets faltered down the stretch in the opening two sets.
