Montgomery, Ala. | Sandwiched between trips to opposite ends of the continental United States, Alabama State will take a short trip to the Gulf Coast Tuesday to compete against South Alabama at 6 pm.
The Lady Hornets are looking to rebound following a challenging 0-3 weekend in Colorado as the pre-conference portion of the schedule winds down.
After eleven matches, Alabama State ranks first in the conference in numerous categories, leading the way in: match win-loss percentage (0.273), team assists (361), team kills (393) and team total attacks (1,208). Senior
Kori Kutsch ranks first in the SWAC in total assists (311) and assists per set (7.59). She also is tenth in digs per set (2.54), while
Kayla Torres comes in at fourth with 3.15 digs per set. Kutsch now has 2,369 career assists. Middle Blocker
Candace Martin leads the SWAC with 39 total blocks and ranks second with 0.94 blocks per set.
Bayle' Bennett ranks fourth with 89 total kills and third in service aces (10). Freshman
Alexandria Sarathy's eight service aces also place the defensive specialist inside the top ten.
A season ago (Sept. 5, 2017) the Jags escaped victoriously (3-0). Alabama State last defeated South Alabama in 1985, 3-0. The Jaguars are led by Kelly Hartman (117 kills) and Hannah Harris (76 kills). Hartman has also added 14 service aces. Ashlyn Roberts has posted 115 digs (3.48 digs per set) and Morgan Stalcup has anchored the defense with 32 total blocks (0.97 digs per set). South Alabama (4-5) has notched three straight wins, including a 3-0 sweep of Mississippi State.
The Lady Hornets next travel to Orlando for the VolleyKnights Invitational, hosted by UCF, opening the tournament Friday at 12 pm versus the tournament hosts.
