Montgomery, Ala. | The Alabama State volleyball team continues its march through Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a short swing through the Magnolia State, as the Lady Hornets visits Mississippi Valley State Sunday (6 p.m.) and subsequently travels to Alcorn State Monday (7 p.m.).
Alabama State ranks near the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in numerous statistical categories. The Lady Hornets rank third in digs (892), second in service aces (55), second in total blocks (189), third in kills (758), third in total assists (707) and second in service aces (88).
Kori Kutsch ranks first in the SWAC in total assists (563) and assists per set (7.51). Kutsch now has 2,816 career assists. Middle Blocker
Candace Martin ranks second in the conference with 66 total blocks and is third with 0.88 blocks per set. Libero
Kayla Torres leads the conference with 226 digs.
This weekend also holds significance for head coach
Penny Lucas-White. Now in her eighth year leading the Lady Hornets, she is on the verge of win No. 150 at Alabama State, having amassed 149 career wins to date.
Mississippi Valley State enters the match with a record of 2-17 (0-5 SWAC). The Delta Devils won their lone home match of the season on September 10, dispatching Crowley's Ridge College in three sets. In its final match of the SWAC Roundup, MVSU went five sets with Grambling before eventually falling short. Tyler Caliste (144 kills) leads the offense and Taylor Selfridge has put up 17 service aces. Jessica Bell has notched 199 digs (3.26 per set) and setter Jamie Polk has recorded 240 assists. In 2017, Alabama State won both matches, 3-0 and 3-1.
Alcorn State is fresh off two straight SWAC victories at the SWAC Roundup, boasting an overall record of 5-9 and a conference mark of 3-2. The Braves are paced by Sydney Joseph's 130 kills and 138 total points. Fiapaipai Iosia leads the SWAC with 41 service aces and leads Alcorn State with 159 digs. Daharri Thompkins and Simone Barren are tied for the team lead with 25.0 blocks.
