Montgomery, Ala. – Despite being only one of three seniors on the Alabama State volleyball team, senior
Morgan Weatherwax is still considered one of the leaders on the team due to her experience of playing junior college and Division II volleyball.
Â
Prior to the season beginning, the first-year senior sat down and described her journey to this point in her career and her expectations for the season.
Â
When did you begin playing volleyball? Why volleyball?
Morgan Weatherwax: I began playing volleyball when I was 12 years old in the sixth grade. My mom was my first coach and my older sister played volleyball so they taught me how to love the sport.
Â
Any other sports? Why did you stick with volleyball?
MW: I played basketball, track, and softball. I stuck with volleyball because it is a different team experience. I felt my leadership came alive in volleyball rather than the other sports. Also, I have a lot of passion for volleyball because my mom was my coach and my sister helped me out through the hard times.
Â
Talk about your experiences at the junior college and Division II levels.
MW: My junior college experience was very good. One thing that has really made me love the sport, even more, was my junior college coach passed away my last season there while I was transitioning to Metro State. That taught me not to take the sport for granted. Going from Metro State to Alabama State reminded me of the love that I have for the sport. Sometimes you can fall out of love with the sport but it is always going to be there and it has shaped who I am. My teammates and the coaching that I've had have been very different but I am grateful for the experiences that I have had.
Â
Why Alabama State?
MW: I chose Alabama State because Coach
Penny Lucas-White and Coach
LaToya Clark were two of the main forces that brought me in. I did not have an official visit here so I did not know what to expect when I came here, but over the phone, I could tell that Coach Lucas-White passion and excitement that she had for me really drove me to come here. Also, I admired how successful she has been, how she runs the program and how she helps her players off the volleyball court as well.
Â
Thoughts on the upcoming season? Any particular game?
MW: I am really looking forward to playing Alabama A&M. They are a good team so it is always good to have that matchup. I am ready to work towards the SWAC Championship and hopefully going past the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Interesting fact?
MW: I am an artist! I actually drew one of my tattoos.
Â
Shout outs?
MW: I wanted to shout out my family! They are always there for me and I love them.
