BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Alabama State men finished with a win, while the women finished in second at the SWAC Fall Invitational in Birmingham this week.
The Hornets remained on top of the leaderboard in day two of competition, shooting a final round five-under (283) to finish atop of the standings with a five-under (581). Alabama State finished three strokes ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (584) and five ahead of Florida A&M (586). Prairie View A&M shot 23-over (599), and Alabama A&M shot a 43-over (619) to finish in fourth and fifth respectively.
Gonzalo Moreno (Seville, Spain) continued his strong play in the event, finishing as the low medalist with a day two score of four-under 68 for a total of three-under at 141, followed by
Thacher Neal (Kingsland, Ga.), who shot up 13 spots on day two with a three-under 69 and 145 total for the event.
Ty Roberts (Canyon, Texas) was the third Hornet to finish in the top ten, tying for tenth, with an even-par day to finish his tournament shooting four-over at 148, leading teammate
Thomas Caddell (Vance, Ala.), who finished 13th, by two strokes after Caddell finished with a six-over 150.
Bishop Stringer (Cecil, Ala.) was the final Alabama State golfer in competition, shooting a nine-over on day to end the tournament tied for 22 with a total of 154.
Teresa Diez Dorta (Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Spain) led the women's side from start-to-finish, ending the second day of play four-over for a total of 155, finishing as the low medalist. Teammates
Katie Robinson (American Canyon, Calif.) and
McKenzie LeDuff (Lake Charles, La.) also both finished in the top 10, with Robinson finishing the two-day event shooting 11-over for the day and a 168 total, while LeDuff rose two spots from day one, shooting a 171 over the past two days.
Hallie Bridgers (Baltimore, Md.) was the fourth and final Hornet in the top 10 rankings, shooting a 15-over on Tuesday to finish at 174, while
Iman Adams (Cape Town, South Africa) tied for 11th at 188 and
Tia Kimbrough (Bellville, Ill.) finished in 17th with a 204.
The team finished with a score of 92-over and 668, just four strokes behind the winner Texas Southern.
