Penny Lucas-White released the 2023 volleyball schedule featuring six home matches and four matches against teams from Power 5 conferences.
Alabama State begins the season on the road at Power 5 foe Cincinnati in a tournament hosted by the Bearcats. The Lady Hornets will face Cincinnati (August 25), Indiana State (August 26), and Xavier (August 27) to open the season. They stay on the road when they head to Orlando to play in a tournament hosted by UCF. The Lady Hornets face a pair of Power 5 opponents that weekend including Wake Forest (September 1) and UCF (September 3) – an NCAA Tournament team last season. In between those matches, they will face FIU (September 2).
The Lady Hornets return to Lockhart Gymnasium for their first home match of the season when they host North Alabama on September 5.
Following the match against the Lions, Alabama State hits the road for a pair of tournaments beginning with the Seahawk Volleyball Classic on September 7. Over the course of the weekend, they will face UNC-Wilmington (September 7), Norfolk State (September 8), and East Carolina (September 9). Their final in-season tournament takes place the following weekend in Tucson (Ariz.) where they will face New Mexico State and Long Beach State (both on September 15), before facing their final Power 5 opponent Arizona (September 16).
The Lady Hornets begin Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play on September 22 on the road against Florida A&M before facing Bethune-Cookman on September 24. They stay on the road on September 29 against Alabama A&M before heading to the SWAC Cluster in Houston to face Texas Southern (October 8), Prairie View A&M (October 8), and Southern (October 9).
Following a pair of matches against Jackson State (October 15) and Mississippi Valley State (October 16), the Lady Hornets return home for two matches against Florida A&M (October 20) and Bethune-Cookman (October 22).
The final five matches of the regular season have Alabama State on the road in Daytona Beach (Fla.) for the SWAC Cluster II against Grambling State (October 29), Alcorn State (October 29), and UAPB (October 30). They close out the regular season at home with a trio of matches against Alabama A&M (November 3), Mississippi Valley State (November 10) and Jackson State (November 12).
Alabama State, the defending regular season champion, looks to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. The Lady Hornets have won six conference titles since 2013 and have appeared in six NCAA Tournaments.
