Chelsey Scott had a double-double with a career-high 20 kills and 10 digs, but it was not enough as Alabama State dropped a thrilling 3-1 game to Alabama A&M in SWAC volleyball action.
Anniiya Robinson also chipped in with a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs while Brook Beasley had a game-high 53 assists.
Luiza Griz also had a game-high 18 digs in the loss.
The big gun in the game was AAMU's Clairissa Moore who finished with a game high 21 kills and no errors in 39 attempts. The senior hit .538 in the game and completed her double-double with 15 digs. Bianca Richardson had 11 kills and Mary Carman-Aponte had 17 digs. Ashley Forman had 47 assists.
The first set saw AAMU jump out 7-2, but after that the Lady Hornets clawed their way back into the set and took their first lead at 12-11. The set featured 15 ties and five lead changes, but with the score even at 29, ASU got a service ace from
Luiza Griz and a kill from
Chelsey Scott to finish the set at 31-29.
Robinson and Scott led the way with four kills each and
Myla Marshall had four blocks. Moore led the way with five kills for the Lady Bulldogs.
The second set was much like the first as it contained 11 ties and four lead changes as the Lady Bulldogs evened the game at one with a 27-25 win.
The Lady Hornets out hit AAMU .268 to .235, but the four service errors and 13 attack errors helped AAMU in the set. Moore had six kills for AAMU and Scott added nine for ASU.
In AAMU's 25-21 third set win, it was AAMU taking over from a 14-all tie and out scoring ASU 6-1 to go up 20-15 and the Lady Hornets never recovered from the run.
It was AAMU's best offensive set of the game hitting .351 with Mariah Brown and Moore contributing four kills each.
Scott and Robinson had four kills for ASU, but the Lady Hornets only hit .184 as a team.
AAMU and ASU battled through 21 ties and nine lead changes before the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 27-25 in set four. Moore had another five kills and Leslie Ekpe and Bianca Richardson had four each. AAMU hit .387 in the set.
Amber Bennett had six kills and Scott finished with three but it was not enough.
“Anyone who saw this game saw two teams battle back and forth and unfortunately we came out on the losing end,” Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. “While I was pleased with our effort, I was not pleased with the outcome. We had leads in all four sets and our serve game failed us over and over again.”
“I will give A&M credit, they made the plays when they had to and we did not. We need to regroup before our game with Valley on Saturday and work on cutting out these mistakes.”
AAMU moves to 9-19 overall and 6-2 in the East Division of the SWAC while ASU falls to 7-24 overall and 3-4 in the division. The Lady Hornets will host Mississippi Valley State in their final regular season game of the year Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.
It will be the final game the Lady Hornets will collect canned food items to deliver to Stewpot Food Bank in Jackson, Miss., at the SWAC Volleyball Tournament.
